This is our chance to pass the Equality Act.

Opponents of the Equality Act argued time and again that it would infringe on their freedoms, when we know that it’s actually the other way around: The religious right continues to use their perverse definition of religious freedom to try to legitimize discrimination against LGBTQ people.

The lack of federal protections for LGBTQ people leaves very few options for those who seek justice for discrimination. And the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) has made that all the more challenging. Companies, individuals, and taxpayer-funded organizations—from foster care agencies to universities—continue to use religions as a weapon against LGBTQ people when they are seeking publicly available services.

The Equality Act will prohibit religiously-motivated discrimination against LGBTQ people and so much more. It will amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include mandates against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Additionally, It will codify equal protections for LGBTQ people within healthcare, employment, education, housing, and federally funded programs. Passing the Equality Act is essential to ensuring vital protections for the LGBTQ community. The House passed the Equality Act, now it's the Senate's turn.
