We have humanists to thank for the growth of the Congressional Freethought Caucus today

Great things happen when humanists talk to their members of Congress.

I am pleased to share that recently one of our members reached out to me letting me know that they had just spoken with Representative Carolyn Maloney of New York, and invited her to join the Congressional Freethought Caucus. Not even a day later, we had confirmation that she had joined!

Sometimes an ask is all it takes.

The Congressional Freethought Caucus, co-chaired by Representative Huffman and Representative Raskin, has four objectives:

  1. Promotes public policy formed on the basis of reason, science, and moral values.

  2. Protects the secular character of our government by adhering to the strict Constitutional principle of the separation of church and state.

  3. Opposes discrimination against atheists, agnostics, humanists, seekers, religious and nonreligious persons, and to champion the value of freedom of thought and conscience worldwide.

  4. Provides a forum for members of Congress to discuss their moral frameworks, ethical values, and personal religious journeys.

A member does not need to be nonreligious to join, they just need to be committed to secular governance. Can you take two minutes to reach out to your representative now and invite them to be the next member to join the caucus? If you have a personal relationship with a member and would like to send them additional materials, don’t hesitate to reach out. After all, that’s what I’m here for.

And if Congresswoman Maloney is your representative, please consider sending her office a thank you note through our online action headquarters.

P.S. - Good news comes in twos: Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) also joined the caucus this week. If he’s your congressman, please thank him with a note through our action headquarters.
