Tell Your Senators to Support the Keep Public Funds in Public Schools Act!
Last year, Congress just barely managed to eke through a national school voucher program through a technicality; now, the program is set to give billions of dollars in taxpayer funds to private elementary and secondary school students at mostly religious schools.
We know that vouchers destabilize children’s education, weaken secular public schools, privatize critical funds that would otherwise be used for public services, and circumvent student protections and benefits. We should not be subsidizing private education–the majority of which is religious–with public funds.
Now, Senators Kelly and Hirono are leading a bill in Congress (S.4297) that will repeal this program entirely. Take just one moment now to tell your Senators to cosponsor and support this legislation.
Private schools discriminate against marginalized groups like religious minorities, LGBTQ youth, and girls. They can even charge nonreligious students higher tuition. For this and countless other reasons, vouchers are unpopular with constituents; in fact, voters have rejected every single state voucher and tax credit referendum since 1970.
Public schools, which are accountable to the public, serve all children, regardless of where they’re from, what they have, or who they are, which makes them the only educational institution deserving of public dollars and truly built to serve the common good. 68% of voters agree.
Your elected officials should oppose using public funds for private education and support keeping them in public schools. Take just one minute now to tell your Senators to cosponsor and support the Keep Public Funds in Public Schools Act.
